1904
Stephen Andrew and Samantha (Mattie) Shurtleff Agren built this home in 1904. It is constructed of brick, lined with adobe, and it was one of the first homes to have modern indoor facilities. The foundation was built of solid rock. Builders soaked the lumber in the Great Salt Lake because they thought it made it stronger.
Andrew Agren received the property from his stepfather Carl Anderson. Andrew farmed the property for years; then the property was acquired by his son, Grant A. and wife Louisa S. Agren. Andrew and Mattie continued to live in a portion of the home for a while.
Grant and Louisa made changes to the home including removing the front porch and adding a garage. When Harrisville incorporated, Louisa became the City Recorder and Treasurer for the new city, and a room in the home was set up as the first city office. Grant and Louisa raised their family here and later sectioned off spaces in the home to create apartments.
