Melvin Rogers Family LC 113520001
This one-story residential home constructed of frame masonry veneer (now painted white) with a full basement was built in 1915, by Ellen Agren and her sister Ida Agren.
Orson S. and Lizzie Rogers acquired the home and started the Rogers Poultry Farm in 1937. Orson brought his son Melvin into the business, and in addition to the eggs produced by the chickens they raised on their property, they bought eggs from local citizens in the county. They graded the eggs for size and quality, and packaged them in containers identifying them as “Rogers Eggs,” and delivered them to stores throughout the county.
In 1942, Orson and his son Melvin expanded their production by purchasing property north of the home at 428 North Harrisville Road. In 1948, they also bought property east of the home. The acreage totaled 19 acres, and they had approximately 18,000 chickens. They expanded by making connections with other producers. Eventually they phased out of egg production, and sold their chickens to The Campbell Soup Company.
Property to the east was sold off for commercial businesses, and a U-Haul trailer rental business occupied the property north of this home for awhile.
