1871

In 1871, soon after Noah and Cornelia Samantha Hancock Shurtleff married, they built a two-room adobe house on property owned by his father, Luman A. Shurtleff, an early pioneer.  Later they added two more rooms and then added a second story with pink hand-fired brick exterior. The property included a barn and silo.

1928

Horace and Inga Hegstead Shurtleff, (Noah’s oldest son and his wife) moved into this house with their six children in 1910.  In 1916, a fire ruined the home.  The original two-room adobe was not destroyed, so they lived in it until they were able to rebuild.  The two-room adobe is still part of the home rebuild, completed in 1928.

For a short time after Horace died and Inga was a widow, the home was converted into a duplex. Leslie and Aileen Doone Crowther rented the second unit.

William (Bill) Shurtleff, son of Horace and Inga was the next owner of the home.  After Bill returned from World War II, he married Maurine Carr, also from Harrisville.  He went on to complete Dental School in Chicago, and then he completed a two-year tour of duty with the Air Force, after which he and Maurine moved their family into the home.

The barn on the property was destroyed by fire from children playing with matches.  It was replaced with an attractive barn which was not only useful for the animals but was also popular for community parties and even weddings.  Bill had a love for scouting and was a great influence on the young men in Harrisville.  In April 1962, he was one of the first members of the newly incorporated town board of Harrisville. Bill later served on the city council and as Mayor.

In 1976, after his children were raised, Bill marred Roma Anderson Hall, and they lived here together for a number of years. The home is still in the family, now occupied by Bill’s granddaughter, Natalie Maw and husband Robert Hales.
