HARRISVILLE CITY

historic HARRISVILLE

“In 1850, Shoshone Chief Terikee was shot and killed in a corn field by settler Urban Stewart. . . Some said it was an accident: Stewart thought it was an animal in his corn. Others said Stewart meant to frighten the chief, not kill him. Others say he did it intentionally, out of spite. The death of Chief Terikee went unresolved for 170 years. In 2021, the Shoshone and descendants of Urban Stewart came together in the spirit of healing, history, and preservation and placed this monument.

Thank you to Weber County Heritage Foundation for co-sponsoring and preserving this historic event.

“Those who attended will remember the special spirit of the event. We cannot change the past, but we can let it lead us to enlightenment. Let us speak to each other with medicine words.” – Darren Parry
