HARRISVILLE CITY

historic HARRISVILLE

In 1873, Brigham Young encouraged establishment of the silk industry.  Louisa Sargent Harris, wife of Martin Henderson Harris, planted mulberry bushes and raised silkworms in Harrisville.  She had nearly 11,000 worms one year.  She produced enough silk to have a dress made.  In 1893 the dress was sent to the World’s Fair in Chicago to represent silk industry in Utah.  The dress is now displayed at the Daughters of Utah Pioneers Museum in Ogden.
